According to UNICEF, 132 million children in the world have lost one or both parents. Roughly 87.6 million
orphans live in Asia, 43.4 million orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa, 12.4 million orphans live in Latin America and the Caribbean, and almost 1.5 million children live in public care in Central and Eastern Europe. Over the past decade, 179,719 children from around the world were welcomed into families in the U.S. through inter- country adoption. The top five sending countries in 2010 were: China, Ethiopia, Russia, South Korea and Ukraine.
